Chia seeds are the seeds of Salvia hispanica, a plant species of the genus sage that originates almost exclusively in Mexico and Central America. Chia seed is a food with a naturally high fibre content and plant-based omega-3 fatty acids. A daily intake of 2 g of omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid) helps to maintain normal blood cholesterol levels. Just 15 g of chia seeds per day (equivalent to 2.8 g of omega-3 fatty acids) can contribute to a cholesterol-conscious diet.
